Listen to Remember
Everyone learns differently; therefore, we must find our own way to listen and remember! Do your best to remember the names of those in your community. This will strengthen the trust that is necessary to create a strong community of practice. Find a technique that works for you.
Pay Attention
Give the speaker your undivided attention. Make eye contact, use appropriate body language but really listen to what they are contributing to the conversation. Make note of information that you want to elaborate on or come back to.
Listen Actively
Again, use body language that supports your listening. Nod, smile, and maintain eye contact. Use short verbal affirmations, such as “interesting.” Avoid movements that may be distracting or indicate that you are uncomfortable or disinterested.
Responding
When responding, make sure your speaker has completed their thoughts. Do not interrupt. When it is your turn to respond, ask open-ended or probing questions, paraphrase their thoughts to show that you were listening and that they are valued. Share similar experiences that are relevant to what they have offered.
